About Cathy Schultz

Cathy Schultz is a contemporary artist based in Gwelup, Perth, Western Australia, whose practice is rooted in the quiet wisdom of the natural world.

Her process begins with daily walks — camera in hand, dog by her side — collecting glimpses of pattern, light, and texture. She captures the essence of what nature is offering: shadows, fragments, light and colour. Using the photos, she brings the images into my ipad to digitally manipulates the image/s. From this place she decides whether a painting, pattern, or digital work wants to come through.

In the studio, Cathy begins each painting day by sage clearing her sacred studio space and intuitively paints the base layer. She then transfers the image on top and continues the painting until finished. She approaches each layer with the considered eye of a printmaker — colour and placement carefully chosen, nothing left to chance.
